Carbon Capture — Pipeline Projects

DENSE-PHASE CO PIPELINE

CO TRANSPORTATION & METERING

Provided full-scope engineering design, procurement, and construction support, inclusive of on-site field engineering, for 38km of NPS 10 and 12 pipeline designed to Class 1500.

Project included pigging infrastructure, block valve sites, metering, compositional monitoring, overpressure protection (OPP) design, and third-party tie-ins.

CENTRAL ALBERTA CARBON HUB

CO TRANSPORTATION, METERING & SEQUESTRATION

Obsidian has provided front‑end engineering design (FEED) and total installed cost (TIC) estimating support for a large‑scale carbon capture and storage hub in Central Alberta. The system is designed for an initial capacity of 1.24 MTPa with provisions for future expansion to 2.7 MTPa.

Scope of work includes pipeline infrastructure comprising of approximately 23 km of NPS 12, along with associated pigging facilities, inlet metering and compositional monitoring station design, and the design of three injection well sites. Additional services included dispersion modelling support, fracture control plan development support, well site downhole hydraulic modelling and pipeline thermo-hydraulic modelling to support safe start-up, shutdown, and upset scenarios.

CENTRAL SASKATCHEWAN CARBON HUB

CO TRANSPORTATION, METERING & SEQUESTRATION

Obsidian has completed a feasibility study and total installed cost (TIC) estimating support for a large‑scale carbon capture and storage hub in Central Saskatchewan. The system is designed for an initial capacity of 1.1 MTPa with provisions for future expansion to 2.2 MTPa.

Scope of work includes pipeline infrastructure comprising of approximately 70 km of NPS 10 pipeline, along with associated pigging facilities, inlet metering and compositional monitoring station design, and the design of five injection well sites for phase 1, and up to 9 injection well sites for phase 2. Additional services included dispersion modelling support, fracture control plan development support, well site downhole hydraulic modelling and pipeline thermo-hydraulic modelling to support safe start-up, shutdown, and upset scenarios.

CO₂ PIPELINE & INJECTION FACILITY

CO TRANSPORTATION

Obsidian delivered FEED and detailed design of a 60 km, NPS 10 dense-phase CO₂ pipeline connecting a major facility to an existing injection site in central Alberta.

Our integrated scope covered multidisciplinary design for pipeline, injection, facility tie-in and valve sites, regulatory and dispersion modelling support, route optimization, constructability reviews, line pipe specifications (fracture study), material procurement, and project management, project controls, contracting, and construction management support.

DENSE-PHASE CO₂ PIPELINE & CCS FACILITY

CO TRANSPORTATION, METERING & SEQUESTRATION

Obsidian delivered FEED engineering for a 28km NPS 6 dense-phase CO₂ pipeline and injection well pads in Saskatchewan.

The scope included full electrical, controls, and safety system integration, ESD valves, metering, blowdown system design and DCS tie-in with the existing system. We also supported pipeline design, including hydraulic analysis, to support operating procedure development, as well as product specification review (i.e. water content limits), design basis development, procurement support, and vendor documentation.

Carbon Capture — Facility Projects

DIRECT AIR CAPTURE (DAC) PROJECTS

Engineering support across multiple DAC projects, including facilities, injection wells, and conceptual studies. Experience includes adapting internationally designed systems for Canadian regulatory and climatic conditions.

  • CSA, ABSA, and provincial compliance reviews for European and US-designed equipment

  • CRN registration strategy and provincial regulatory coordination

  • Engineering authentication across all disciplines

  • Winterization assessments and equipment substitution guidance

  • General engineering including FEED and pilot project scale-ups.

CO₂ TECHNOLOGY SELECTION

Independent, engineering-led assessments to help clients evaluate and select fit-for-purpose CO₂ processing and infrastructure solutions, from source facility requirements through transportation and injection.

  • Facility & Technology Selection: Evaluation of capture, purification, dehydration, and compression technologies based on feed composition, capacity, operating conditions, and project-specific requirements.

  • Pipeline Interfacing: CO₂ specification development, material selection, fracture control, hydraulic performance, transient conditions, and blowdown requirements that influence facility design.

  • Injection Requirements: Evaluation of compression, metering, pressure control, product quality, and wellpad integration requirements for sequestration or EOR applications.

We don't just follow CO₂ standards. We write them.

CSA Group is a global leader in safety, sustainability, and standards development — and Obsidian Engineering holds an active seat at the table where Canada's CO₂ pipeline standards are being shaped.

This involvement strengthens our understanding of current and emerging industry practices, helping us develop designs that are technically sound and aligned with the evolving Canadian standards framework.
